Why financial planning is more than managing investments

Many people assume that financial planning is primarily about investments.

Understandably so.

Investment markets receive enormous attention. Financial news focuses on stock markets, interest rates and economic forecasts. Investment performance is often the easiest aspect of financial advice to measure.

But in reality, managing investments is only one component of financial planning.

Often, it is not the most important component.

Over the years, we have found that the decisions which have the greatest impact on people’s financial lives are rarely about choosing between one fund and another.

Instead, they tend to involve questions such as:

  • Can I afford to retire?
  • When should I take my pension?
  • How much is enough?
  • Should we move house?
  • Can we help our children financially?
  • Are we paying more tax than necessary?
  • How should we structure our assets?
  • What happens if one of us dies?
  • How do we create financial security without sacrificing the lifestyle we enjoy today?

These are planning questions.

And they are often far more important than investment questions.

A well-constructed investment portfolio matters to help manage those ups and downs. Of course it does.

But even the best investment strategy cannot compensate for poor planning decisions.

  • Retiring too early
  • Holding excessive cash
  • Taking unnecessary tax liabilities
  • Supporting family members in an unsustainable way
  • Becoming overly concentrated in a single asset class

These decisions can have a far greater impact on long-term outcomes than marginal differences in investment performance.

This is why good financial planning begins with understanding people, not products.

Before discussing investments, we need to understand objectives.

  • What are you trying to achieve?
  • What does financial security mean to you?
  • What trade-offs are acceptable?
  • What are you worried about?
  • What opportunities are available?

Only then can appropriate recommendations be made.

For many clients, the most valuable tool is not an investment portfolio at all.

It is a financial plan.

A plan that brings together assets, liabilities, income, expenditure, taxation, property, pensions and future objectives into a coherent framework.

The investments sit within that framework.

Not the other way around.

Wealth management remains an important part of what we do.

But it is not the starting point.

Because successful financial planning is not about building a portfolio.

It is about building a life and ensuring your finances support it.
