The cost of waiting for certainty

Most significant financial decisions have one thing in common.

People want certainty before they act.

They want certainty before investing.

  • Certainty before moving home
  • Certainty before retiring
  • Certainty before selling a business
  • Certainty before helping their children financially

Unfortunately, certainty rarely arrives.

The future remains stubbornly unknowable, regardless of how much information we gather.

  • Markets move
  • Interest rates change
  • Governments alter tax rules
  • Property prices rise and fall
  • Economic forecasts are revised
  • Life happens

Yet many people spend years waiting for a moment when everything feels clear.

The problem is that waiting is a decision in itself.

Holding excess cash is a decision.

Delaying retirement is a decision.

Postponing a property purchase is a decision.

Deferring an investment strategy is a decision.

And every decision carries consequences.

We occasionally meet people who have spent years waiting for the “right” moment to invest because markets looked expensive.

Others have delayed moving home because property prices might fall.

Some have postponed retirement because they wanted one more year of certainty.

Often, the certainty never arrives.

Instead, years pass while opportunities disappear.

This does not mean rushing into decisions.

Far from it.

Good decisions deserve careful thought.

The objective is not certainty.

The objective is confidence.

Confidence that you understand the risks involved.

Confidence that you have considered the alternatives.

Confidence that the decision remains sensible even if conditions change.

Confidence does not come from eliminating uncertainty. It comes from understanding the risks involved, recognising that investments can rise and fall in value, and appreciating that money invested over the longer term has historically grown more than cash savings.

The most successful long-term plans are rarely built on perfect predictions.

They are built on robust decisions that can withstand uncertainty.

That is one of the reasons financial planning matters.

The world is complex.

There are often multiple moving parts, competing priorities and imperfect information.

Trying to solve every uncertainty before making a decision can leave people permanently stuck.

Our role is not to predict the future.

Our role is to help clients understand the complexity, evaluate the options and make informed decisions with confidence.

Because waiting for certainty can be surprisingly expensive.

And moving forward with a considered plan is often far more valuable than waiting for perfect information.
